Pfizer Inc. said Tuesday that the drugmaker is seeking FDA approval to sell Viagra, the little blue pill that is the world's most popular drug, to treat impotence. Pfizer said the FDA is investigating if Pfizer Inc. and several other drug companies could be affected by the FDA's decision.
Viagra, approved in late December, is the world's most successful drug. It has already been sold for more than $1 billion by the end of 2019. Pfizer's patent on Viagra expired in November. Other drugs that Pfizer has already approved include Lipitor and Zoloft, which are used to treat depression, cholesterol and blood pressure problems. All three have already been approved by the FDA.
Viagra is sold as a tablet to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It is available in pill form on the drug's website.
The FDA has asked Pfizer to stop selling Viagra to treat impotence in children, but it will still manufacture the medicine.
Pfizer is seeking approval to market Viagra to adults, but it also will sell other drugs for impotence to treat other conditions.
Other drugs Pfizer has already approved include Lipitor and Zoloft, which are used to treat depression and cholesterol problems.
But pharmaceutical companies can not sell drugs over the counter without FDA approval.
In addition, the company is also seeking FDA approval to sell generic versions of Viagra. A generic version of Viagra is not expected until Dec. 21.
